The Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, in New Orleans, allows people to indulge before the start of Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. You can rest assured though, because you are in for one hell of a ride, with more fun, more excitement, more celebrations and more colorful costumes than you will have ever seen before.

The Mardi Gras is French in origin and can be traced all the way back to somewhere in the Middle Ages. It was the Frenchman, Iberville, who bought the Mardi Gras name to Louisiana, when he came ashore around sixty miles from what we now know as New Orleans. He called that particular place, Point du Mardi Gras. For one reason or another it wasn't until 1823 that the first serious Mardi Gras celebration, as we know it today anyway, occurred with parties and great merriment being a hallmark from the beginning. The Mardi Gras has really thrived from the beginning of the 20th Century and this huge carnival just keeps getting bigger every year. With much revelry and dancing in the streets, accompanied by beautifully decorated horse drawn carriages and floats, what is there not to like?

What you will find at this outrageous carnival are French royals, showgirls dressed in feathers, painted clowns and bunnies, all parading the streets of New Orleans. You can join in the throngs of people to watch magnificent floats go by, performers performing outrageous tricks and heaps of marching bands and plenty of jazz music to draw you in. You can expect to see more than 350 floats and over 15000 costumes being paraded.

Many famous traditions started with Mardi Gras and one originated from a visit by the Russian duke Alexis Romanoff. Today this royal visit from the house of Romanoff is flaunted with their royal house colors of purple, green and gold, which stand for justice, faith and power and which have now become the official colors of the Mardi Gras. Another wonderful tradition is the throwing of thousands upon thousands of colorful bead necklaces from the floats, a souvenir everyone loves to take home with them, along with cups and toy coins.

In order for everyone to enjoy the excitement, Mardi Gras is a public holiday in New Orleans, so businesses close and streets are shut down.

Another New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition is the "King Cakes" and there are over 500,000 of these king cakes sold each year throughout the city between 6 January and the day of Mardi Gras. This Mardi Gras specialty also sees over 50,000 king cakes shipped from New Orleans as well. Some of these king cakes actually include a small plastic baby doll inside. The person who gets one of these cakes is declared 'the king'. Unfortunately it is not the best prize as it is your turn to buy the next cake if this occurs.

At the commence of Mardi Gras season in New Orleans a group of about fifty people called the Phunny Phorty Phellows, (or PPP for short) ride in their costumes in a decorated car along St Charles Avenue blowing loud trumpets. They are also accompanied by another New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition, the Dixieland band.

One can go on talking about the New Orleans Mardi Gras, but you have to be there to experience the magic. It is on the bucket list of things to do for millions of would-be travelers.

There Is More To San Fermin Than Just The Running Of The Bulls

Spain is a fabulous holiday destination and the fact that a few years back it was the second most visited country in the world after France gives you an indication of its popularity. Its mild climate, its sandy beaches, its entertainment hot spots, nightlife and festivals ensure Spain remains a sparkling gem in the tourism crown.

Spain really has some world renowned festivals. One of those is La Tomatina, held in Bunol, near Valencia. This festivals involves people throwing tomato at each other! But by far the biggest and best festival is the San Fermin, which is held in Pamplona every July. The San Fermin is best known for its crazy Running of the Bulls held every morning of the festival.

The Pamplona Running of the Bulls is something that I've always watched on TV with great intrigue. This year I made the decision to attend the world renowned San Fermin Festival between 6 and 14 July. I guess I love a bit of risk and a bit of a a challenge, so the thought of running in front of snorting, angry and frenzied bulls just spells excitement and adventure to me. I can honestly say that you really have to see this Bull Run to believe it. It is truly out of this world.

There are bull run events in plenty of towns and cities across Spain, but it is the running of the bulls in Pamplona during the San Fermin Festival that is most famous around the world. I fortunately did my homework and discovered that during the Pamplona Bull Run, hotels in Pamplona can be expensive. As an alternative you can camp and there are companies that do Pamplona tours where they plan everything for you, including transport, tent and breakfast. I was booked into a hotel known as Gran Hotel La Perla which was a perfect choice for me simply because it had a balcony and looked down on the very road where the bulls would come thundering by.

I have to say, just watching the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona is a totally amazing experience. However, I got to thinking that I must be insane for thinking of doing this. Did I really want to be insane just this once? Then I thought about what my family and friends back home will think when I tell them what I have been doing. So Did I? Or Didn't I?? More on this later...

I will keep you guessing on that question as there is plenty to do in Pamplona during San Fermin other than run with the bulls. The whole town seemed to be in just one long party mood and it started early in the day and lasted well into the night. There are heaps of bars in Pamplona that are pumping during San Fermin. I really enjoyed going to tapas bars in the afternoon for a few snacks. Tapas is the perfect way to keep you going during San Fermin in between countless amounts of Sangria! The bars and restaurants open late in Spain, but I guess you also have to realise that everyone has a siesta after lunch, so a lot of Pamplona will be closed down in the afternoon. Day and night there was parades going on. Oh, make sure you catch the fireworks one night too. They are on around 11pm every night.

Ok, so back to the Bull Run. When it finally came time for me to run with the bulls, I said no. I have to say I was actually not happy with the participants in the running of the bulls. When I saw people simply pounding over the people who had fallen in front of them it got me a little worried. Like I watched the casualty report on the first morning after the bull run and some people were seriously hurt. We did however stay for the full seven days, because I really enjoyed that there was simply more to the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona than a crazy and insane Bull Run.

Pamplona is a great place to walk around and soak up the music, the people, and the atmosphere. The Running of the Bulls in Pamplona should be on your bucket list if you, like me, want to be part of something that is utterly uniquely Spanish and above all, enormous fun.

Oktoberfest. A Beer Celebration That Gets Munich's Festival Mood On

I think I would really love my wedding to be the reason for celebrating beer! Feast a queen and a king by tasting as much beer as my liver can bear, eating while people are dancing until their feet go numb. OK, Challenge accepted. I'm getting married at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany!

This Beerfest is for the celebration of the best beers in the world, Bavarian Lagers. It is held in Munich over a 16 day period every September/October. If you go to Oktoberfest one thing that will blow you away is the size of the crowds in Munich. There is millions of people EVERYWHERE! So you really need to plan ahead and get there as early as you can, because actually finding a seat at a table inside the beer halls could take ages. So that is one thing that you have to keep in mind when are Oktoberfest in Munich - Get ready for the crowds!. I actually read up about this beforehand so I got in line at 8am on the opening day so that I was ready for the festivities.

If you really want to get into the tradition of Oktoberfest then I suggest you get yourself the costume. If you are a girl then look into getting a Dirndl, the traditional dress for Bavarian girls. If you're a bloke then get some Lederhosen, the Dirndl's male version. You can rent or buy these traditional outfits from a numbers of shops across Munich. They cost somewhere between 80 and 300 Euros, but I recommend that you definitely consider the costume, it will make your experience so much better.

I stayed in a hotel that was a short walk to the Theresienwiese, which is the name of the area for the Oktoberfest grounds. Munich has plenty of accommodation options, but like anywhere if you want the cheapest price then you should book early. Hotel prices start from around 150Euro per night for a 3 night stay. If you're looking at saving a bit of money on the accommodation then you can also look at hostels and campgrounds.

Like most European cities the public transport is incredible in Munich and you can easily get into and out of the Oktoberfest grounds. The U4 and U5 Metro Lines will take you right to the Oktoberfest grounds with a train arriving around every 10 minutes at the most.

When I first got there I was dazed and confused seeing so many Bavarian people ready to start to party. One wise solution for meeting new people to spend time with, particularly if you are by yourself, is just start up conversations with the people around you. The party people at Oktoberfest are very friendly and if you get the chance to meet locals you will have a more authentic trip and probably learn a thing or two about Munich or the Oktoberfest along the way.

I caught up with some local Bavarians in the Paulaner beer hall who mentioned that there favourite Oktoberfest food is a 1/2 metre long Bratwurst sausage in a large hot dog bun. It is basically a gigantic grilled pork sausage hot dog! Im not normally a big pork eater, but I found out that it is very popular in Germany. Now of course it would not be the Beerfest without beer would it? I found out very quickly that the Oktoberfest beer is much stronger than normal beer and that is just not the alcohol, because the glasses are HUGE! The beer comes in a gigantic 1 liter glass stein. This is also called a Mass in German. So if you want one beer, remember "Ein Mass". A Mass costs around 9euro, but a tip is pretty much mandatory, so a beer will cost you at least 10Euro. After a few drinks you will definitely be singing drinking songs, dancing on the tables and having so much fun. The atmosphere in a beer hall is fantastic with everyone dancing and singing all night long. I left the Oktoberfest when my beer hall, the Lowenbrau, closed at 10.30pm. The trip home in the Metro was hilarious with everyone still partying from the beer halls.

One last thing, if you want to go with a group of similar people you should hook up with one of the Oktoberfest tour groups. Use search engines for companies that specialize in that. They are offering a place to sleep, sometimes with breakfast includes, as well as transport to the festival ground. Some even fly or bus you there from London.

I highly recommend that everyone celebrates beer at least once in their life. Oktoberfest should definitely be on your to do list. I will be back next year for sure.
