A Tip to Protect Artificial Nails in a Tanning Bed

By Maria Cole

When you go to a commercial tanning salon you expect for your skin to get a golden tan, but you don't expect for your stylish artificial nails to get one also. That's because when acrylic nails are exposed to ultraviolet light from commercial tanning beds they tend to turn yellow, not even golden. Unless you like yellow, you're headed back to the salon to have them redone. This could be particularly frustrating if you have just come from the nail salon and made a sizable investment in your getting those nails to look just the way you want.

But this doesn't have to happen to you. There are ways to protect your artificial nails from the UV rays of commercial tanning beds that are cost effective and easy to apply.

One way is to cover your nails by bandaging each one your fingers, which will guaranty that your nails are shielded from the UV rays. This method is highly effective because it ensures that none of the rays will reach your nails. But it may feel uncomfortable to have bandages over your nails and it might look as if you had an accident in the kitchen. Some women prefer to use one or more clear coats of UV protector on each nail, which acts as a sun block against the UV rays from the heat lamps. This finish is easy and inexpensive to apply and will generally offer your nails additional all-around, cost-effective protection from other elements as well.

Another popular method is to use nail savers, which are small pockets that fit over each individual nail. They are made of plastic and also shield the nails from the heat lamps of the tanning bed. A big advantage of using Nail savers is that they are reusable whereas bandages are not. Also nail savers leave no residue and are easy to take on and off whereas bandages may leave a sticky residue from the adhesive. And no one can accuse you of spending too much time in the kitchen.

Lastly, if you arrive at the spa unprepared to protect your nails, you can hang your arms outside of the tanning bed if you are lying down. That way the UV rays won't touch your nails. But upright tanning beds require that you keep your arms inside while you receive your tan. In that case, you might have to live with those yellow nails for a while.
