Use A RC Helicopter Training Simulator To Fly Your Radio Controlled Helicopter

By Jonathan Keith Robertson

Flying your brand spanking new radio controlled helicopter is not as simple as you might think and you will need some RC helicopter training if you have just purchased your first serious model. Follow some of these pointers and you'll avoid a great deal of unwanted and expensive crashes! Here you will see listed the essential beginning steps to flying using a simulator.

Even if you are using a simulator, do try not to let the helicopter 'hit' you! It hurts and in reality it can be expensive when they hit. Try not to let the image on your screen get too far away as if you mirror this in real life, you may never see it again and it's not easy to keep it close to you so do be conscious of this fact and practice.

Practice landing the helicopter exactly where you want it to be. Once you can land it where you want, then see if you can get it to face the way you want as well. Try flying with all the trims slightly off center and then randomly adjust the trims to get used to doing it, then do it again and again. May sound silly, but move all the sticks like you've lost the plot until your radio controlled helicopter looks precarious and then level it out as quickly as possible.

Round two, turn the wind up to 10mph and do it all again. Round three, turn up the turbulence by 10mph and do it all again!

It's really quite fundamental to master the RC Helicopter Training simulator before you practice with the real thing. Now practice flying left to right and then back and forth. Then practice flying in and out without striking or flying over your virtual self.

Do note that the auto rotations you do in the RC helicopter training simulator are way too easy. Do do not rely on the practice sessions to help you in a real event. The closest to a real auto-rotation is to go into whichever configuration screen has the "blade drag ratio" and then double it. I think it's at .22 by default, set it higher to at least .44.

If you haven't already, experiment with a few loops and rolls.

When participating in RC helicopter training, you may well find a few unexpected events that crop up, so be prepared. When you've completed your simulation training and feel more confident, get outside and take your radio controlled helicopter for a spin.

If you can get one, some models like the E-Sky Kob radio controlled helicopter comes with the PC cable already. This particular model is also a good all rounder at a reasonable price for someone who wants a serious model but lacks some experience. Or if you must have something bigger, try the huge Giant Airwolf RTF!
