A Property Can Be Beautified With Flowering Shade Plants

By Gene Bush

Shady areas of a property have the potential to appear gloomy or uninteresting. For this reason, individuals who own homes that face the north often find themselves looking for plants that will thrive with minimal sunlight exposure. Fortunately, there are several varieties of flowering shade plants that grow well without generous amounts of sunlight.

Impatiens are one type of plant that can be grown in areas where sunlight is scarce. Their blooms feature various hues, such as purple, white, pink, and red. Some even feature several colors in one flower. However, they do not grow well in excessively hot temperatures, and therefore it is wise to keep their soil moist. It is best to plant them about six inches apart.

Another type of flowering plant that thrives in areas where sunlight is not plentiful is the Begonia. Begonias feature a shiny green or bronze stem and their blooms range in color from pink and red, to white and yellow. Orange blooms are also commonly seen with this type of plant. Just like impatiens, their soil must be kept damp, and they should be planted approximately 6 inches apart.

The Dwarf Salvia belongs to the sage plant family, but unlike most botanicals in this category, Dwarf Salvia plants feature flowers that bloom once each year. Their petals are usually bright shades of red or purple. Immediately after blooming, the flowers resemble arrows due to their long, pointy shape. When planting, one should leave about eight inches between each flower. They typically bloom from spring to early fall.

Spider lilies are another ideal option for individuals searching for botanicals that will bloom in the absence of sunlight. Spider lilies are partial to shallow soil, and are sure to add an exotic appearance and fragrance to one's property or garden. They usually flower in late autumn and should be positioned about 12 inches apart.

There are many other choices for those looking for flowers that adapt well to shady areas. Regardless of which type of flowering shade plants one finds attractive, there is no doubt that such botanicals will add beauty and charm to any garden or property where they are placed.
