By Ines Flores

For those that live in Canada or anywhere else in the world a true experience that everyone should try and embark upon exists. The adventure in question, is one you will have when embarking upon Churchill Manitoba Polar Bear Tours. It is a way to see these magnificent animals up close and to learn more about them. All of these tours are led by experienced guides.

The land has shallow soil because of the subsurface soil and the rock formations. One of the few trees that manage to grow there are the Black Spruce which is slow growing and is evergreen. It grows to about fifteen metres and the trunk is about 50 centimetres in diameter when fully grown.

The bark of the tree is greyish brown in colour and is scaly and thin. The leaves have an outward show of needles and can be as long as fifteen millimetres. Each one is hard and on the upper sides has a bluish green colour while below is a paler green. They produce cones which are only about four centimetres long and are circular in shape with a dark purple in the beginning and later turning red brown when matured.

The Tundra tour will last about four hours as well as a three hour boat drive to see the whales. There will be a stop off to see the Prince of Whales Fort as well as the culture and heritage of the town. Every morning one will enjoy a filling breakfast as well as a dinner entree of choice. There is also an option of having a helicopter tour, dog mushing as well as kayaking and snorkelling.

The polar bear tourism business started in the 1980s. During the October and November period thousands of these grand creatures wait on the neck of land until the water in the Hudson Bay freezes over so that they can go back to hunting. During the so called summer months there are also tours available where one can see these animals both on land and swimming in the water.

The difference between the polar bear and its closest relative the brown bear is that the former has a more lengthened build and a longer nose and skull. Their ears and tails are smaller and the legs seem to be thicker. Their feet are much larger as they have to walk on ice and use them as paddles while swimming. The claws are also defined as being shorter and have a scooped underside to help with the digging.

All the rooms are the same with two double beds and they are very cosy and warm. The cafe is open to the public and anyone is welcome. They have sirloin steak, caribou pepper steak as well as a speckled trout and Greenland cod. All are Indigenous to the area of Churchill and surrounding areas.

Churchill Polar Bear Tours are taken in tundra vehicles which are made to move over the ice and snow effortlessly. They are designed to protect its passengers from famished and inquisitive bears. The lodges that are on the bears movement routes have protective fences built around for both the bears and the inhabitant's safety.
