An Article On How To Ripen Tomatoes

By Edna Booker

Farming is not as easy as it appears. There are times when the harvesting season comes to an end before the crops in the farm ripen especially in the case of tomatoes. It may also be because the farmer just wants to ripen them on his own at home. For whatever cause, there are many methods of doing this and the article below contains details on how to ripen tomatoes.

Most individuals choose to go about this by just plucking the green tomatoes from the garden and placing them on the shelf to ripen. It is pretty much that simple. The plucked ones may however have to be mature for them to get ripe successfully.

The first step to take after taking them from the garden is cleaning them up. This is due to the fact that they are mostly covered with a lot of dirt. To do this effectively, running water should be used like that flowing from a tap. This is preferred because it sees to it that most of the dirt and pathogens are done away with. They should then be dried using a clean towel in preparation for storage.

The next step now is spreading all these tomatoes on a flat surface and observing to see which of them appear to have spots, are soft or even appear to be rotting. It is important to separate these from the rest to avoid making the whole harvest go bad. In the event that they are not pretty much affected, the farmer may decide to try ripening them separately.

The length of time taken during this process depends on the variety in question. The growth stage they were at the particular time they were picked and also what temperature and humidity they were stored at. Ripening period ranges from several days to a number of weeks.

The individual in question is supposed to keep a regular eye, observing the tomatoes from time to time to see how they are fairing on. This is should be done on a daily basis. During this time, those which are observed to have ripened should be separated from the rest. He should also check out for those which appear to be going bad and also have them removed.

Complete and sufficient aeration is important especially; they are supposed to be stored in an aerated environment which is not dump. To help achieve results faster, then bananas or banana leaves are supposed to be put alongside the tomatoes.

To sum up the above, there are quite many techniques which can be applied for this process. However, the method used does not matter as long as the end result is achieved. Some however say that their taste does not much that of those which are left in the sun to absorb the solar energy and as a result speed up the ripening process. Despite this fact, most people choose to ripen theirs indoors since it has good results in the past.
