Considerations When Camping In Maine

By Joyce Ellis

Many people when thinking of a holiday or weekend break will decide to pack up and go camping in Maine. This kind of vacation is extremely popular due to the fact you are not tied to fixed accommodation and have a little more freedom. Before you pick up your camping gear or take to the road in a motor home you should do a little homework first.

When you have decided on the area you want to stay in, you will need to find a site that has the facilities you will need. You can find campsites listed in phone books and camping magazines which is a good place to start. There are now many sites that are listed on the internet and this can be a good place to do some research before you hit the road.

In many towns and cities there are clubs operating that cater for campers and this can be an excellent place to find a good site. The clubs will have a list of sites that their members have recommended or that are approved by the club. This is a great way to meet other campers and you may also benefit from discounts on bookings by being a member.

Most of the sites will require you to make a booking in advance to let them know how long you will be staying. There are exceptions where you can just turn up and hope to get a pitch but it is advisable to make a reservation to avoid being turned away. If you intend to stay for a while then some discounts are often available after negotiating with the site managers or owners.

All sites will differ from each other and will have different facilities to suit every ones needs. A lot of the places will just be a green field or large open area with no amenities or facilities at all. Others will be like holiday camps with bars, shops and indoor pools which are great for families and long stay vacations.

Some of the large sites in Old Orchard Beach, ME will be trying to attract families and will have suitable facilities. You can find kids clubs, creche facilities and child minding services in many of these family orientated sites. If you need anything because you are taking a baby such as a cot, then you can contact the site before your stay, and they will help if they can.

A lot of the sites will have extra facilities that you may find useful, especially of you are travelling with the family. Electric is available to hook up to, phone lines and internet access which are on a pay as you go basis. For the campers who are staying in tent there will be wash rooms and toilet blocks and you may also have a laundry on site.

When you have stayed at a site there are a few things that you can do to help the owners or management when you leave. Always leave a site clean and tidy and take away any garbage you have and dispose of it properly. If you have had a good experience then it is a good idea to leave the site a good review and this will help future customers with their choices.
