Iceland Travel: Vacationing At The Reykjavik Campground

By Randy Kalp

Iceland is expensive, but for less than $10 you can always setup a tent at the Reykjavik Campground. If you choose to travel without a tent, the Reykjavik Campsite also rents the equipment for a small fee.

The Reykjavik Campsite offers up tenting on a grassy lawn for under $9 a person in Reykjavik. This is by far the cheapest way to see Iceland's vibrant, historic capital city on a budget. Additionally, the campground also rents tents for an extra $10 per day. When you consider that a pint of beer can average $6 and a cup of coffee $3, it's really hard to beat the quality budget accommodations that the Reykjavik Campground has to offer.

Located 15 minutes--walking time-- from the downtown area, the campground offers a kitchen area with hot plates, numerous picnic tables and free WiFi. Additionally, the Reykjavik Campground has clean showers, bathrooms and lots of hot water. If that's still not enough, the campsite is operated in conjunction with Reykjavik City Hostel, run by Hosteling International. Just a stone's throw away, campers have access to the hostel's common area, which looks more like a ski lodge, free WiFi, more bathrooms and showers, and laundry.

Situated less than 2 miles from Reykjavik's tourist, historic downtown section, the Reykjavik Campground is open from May 15 to September 15. Because the campground can accommodate up to 650 people in tents, cabins, caravans or cars, space is almost always available; therefore, no spaces can be reserved and reservations are not required.

Staying at the Reykjavik Campground is a great option for singles, couples or families looking to extend their budget in a country known for its black sand Atlantic Beaches, glaciers and waterfalls. Additionally, right next to the campground is another great budget family option, the Laugardalslaug thermal pool, which is Reykjavik's largest outdoor pool.
