Why I May Need a Commuter Bike

By Rob Sutter

It's pretty astounding once you see the perks of leaving an old job. The scenery around you changes in an instant and it offers you the chance to broaden your career path. However, it could also make you see that it might be time to put money into tools you wouldn't have done before. I was more active in the physical sense at my former place of work and I feel like one of the best ways to keep in shape now is to put time into a commuter bike.

I believe that a commuter bike should be used primarily for traveling between places. While there are bikes which are suited for rougher or uphill terrain and others which work well merely for travel, these types of bikes fall into the latter category. While the aspect of travel is important, I believe a greater point to note is just how great the sense of camaraderie is between bikers. Authorities in the bicycle business like Linus will highlight this point, seeing as how many many cities will have as many bikers as drivers, if not more.

I believe that a commuter bike would be the best fit for me because I feel like I'm going someplace. I don't exactly have the chance to get into my hobbies since I'm typically on the move without fail. If this is the case, why continue to pour money into my car when I can utilize a bike at a lesser cost? Biking was a hobby of mine up until I had my bicycle stolen from my home. Perhaps the idea has soured on me over the years, so maybe I should leave the past where it belongs and try again.

I can't say that it will be easy trying to keep in shape with my new job. At my former place of employment, I had no choice but to take part in menial tasks that still managed to keep me on my feet. Yes, some parts of the job made me grind my teeth in annoyance, but at least they kept me physically fit. My new job may be able to help me since I currently have weekends to myself. Who's to say that I can't take up biking during weekend mornings and have the rest of those days to myself?

Commuter biking has two main positives: it keeps one's body fit while offering a means of travel. I'm sure many people who use it frequently only think of it as a way to go from place to place and this is totally valid. My stance on it, though, is that it's a double-edged blade of sorts. Traveling via cycling cannot be ignored in the physical sense, either, and I am sure that one will often feel the burn in their legs once they're done biking, a sense of accomplishment being felt after.
