Home Security Tips for Vacationers

By Mark Mahaffey

Vacations are times that many people look forward to all year long. It is a time to relax and get away from everyday duties. However, it is hard to relax if you are worried that someone is going to break into your home while you are away. Instead of just eliminating vacations, why not take some action and improve your home security?

Probably the best thing you can do while you are on vacation is to hire a house sitter. Since crooks are on the lookout for empty homes, you can possibly keep them from breaking in by ensuring that your house is not empty while you are gone. A house sitter can live in your house, coming and going naturally, and this may be all it takes to discourage burglars.

If you do not hire a house sitter, you have other options as well. The main goal is to make your house look like someone is living there, and there are strategic ways of doing this. For one thing, you can ask a neighbor to take care of your yard while you are away. And if they will also take your trash to the road on trash day and retrieve your mail, that will be a big help as well.

You can also try other techniques to make your home look appear lived in. You can buy light timers and attach them to several lights in your home. Just set the timers to turn your lights on and off at preselected times. Anyone outside will think that someone is inside the house! Another helpful tips is to leave the television; the voices from the television will be heard outside.

One of the best ways to deter home invasions however is by installing a home security system. Crooks have admitted that they would not break into a home that has a home alarm system! If you install one, be sure to get signs for your yard that let visitors know that you have a system in your home.

By connecting that system to a twenty four hour monitoring service, if someone does happen to break in, the alarm system can send an alert to the monitoring company. They can then call the police to travel to your home to check it out.
