What It Means That The DJ Is The New Rock Star

By Savannah Duck

When you listen to radio these days, you may notice that there are fewer new artists strictly doing their own performance music. More and more, techno and all of its variations are becoming the standard for what is popular. We now live in a world where the DJ is the new rock star in an era of home recordings becoming the next big thing through social media, personal promotion and house parties that can create the next celebrities in sound.

Home recording software has done as much to give rise to this type of new music and artists as anything online. With the new technology, many performers have all of the tools at their disposal that they used to find only in professional studios. Bringing this type of technology to the masses means high-level productions can be made possible by more people.

As the Internet has changed many industries and the way they do business, so it has also brought radical change to the music industry. It used to be that record companies hand-picked the performers it would focus on promoting and touring to win fans and gain fame. Today, with online sites to sell or promote music existing for anyone to use, home recording artists can easily introduce their work to a larger scale of audience than previously possible.

DJs in these times are able to sell out arenas that previously only could be filled by superstars of the pop world. Even the Grammys have given nod to techno DJ performers with segments showing their celebrity capabilities. The enthusiasm these new celebrities are met with can match many musicians with name recognition.

One reason this kind of marketing has taken off is that traditional methods of promotion have changed through the years. Radio stations are increasingly relying on nationally organized formats that skew toward already established performers. Also, television channels that used to be devoted to introducing new music to viewers have switched formats to more reality content based formats.

The Internet has become the new blend of TV and radio in terms of the type of entertainment it can offer in music and video, both produced by these performers. These new artists can use social media to gain audiences and self promote concerts and house parties. Through this, new local, then regional, and ultimately national stars, are born.

Much of this type of work now is heard in commercials. Back in the rock celebrity days, bands would be criticized for going "commercial." The new crop of performers, however, can stay anonymous enough that the music is the star, and the commercial work only adds to their audience exposure.

So technology has given rise to the fact that the DJ is the new rock star in modern music. Take in the scene at any local club venue to see how this new trend is taking hold. You may find that this new breed of celebrity is more than a local personality.
