For Recreational Horseback Riding Long Island Offers Beautiful Trails

By Elsa English

From high sand dunes to amazing ocean beaches, the areas available for equestrian use are lovely. The riders have limited access in the summertime due to tourist use for swimming. When tourists want to go horseback riding long island has beaches on the gorgeous shores that are open to equestrian activity year-round.

Spectacular vistas fill the eyes with wonderful things to look at. The soft sound of waves washing on the shore fill the ears. The distinctive scent of salt water wafts up to fill the sense of smell as the animals carry the riders over the sand with waves lapping gently at their hooves.

One happy little girl leans forward and pats her horse on the neck with her free hand. She is rewarded with a soft whinney from the pleasant animal. Both are enjoying the ride and their wonderful surroundings. They join nature as they move forward.

The one hour trail rides are enjoyed by couples and families with children. Each livery stable has its own age and experience requirements. Everyone wears a helmet for safety reasons.

Aside from the beach trails, nine miles of bridle paths wind through Hempstead Lake State Park. Trail guides are professionally trained to lead groups of riders over these trails. Riders can spot rabbits and turtles who live in the protected environment of the park. The guide can point out an eagles soaring overhead as they ride.

In the summer, when school is out, children can attend a week long horseback riding camp at one of the stables. As the child learns how to care for a horse, he learns how to wash, groom and feed the equine. There is learning about the equipment and how to bridle and saddle a horse.

Small groups will gather in the barn to learn about all that takes place there. They are able to pet and feed the horses as they bond with them. Beginners riding lessons are held in an enclosed outdoor ring, weather permitting.

They anticipate riding lessons the most. It means they will soon go out on the trails. Summer camps are attended by girl and boy scout troops. They and all children enjoy their days of being around these beautiful horses and learning to ride.

There are trails that wind across rolling hills and around five lakes in the park. Autumn is especially gorgeous with the red and gold leaves on the trees and crunching under the horses hooves. The air is crisp and the sky a winter blue.

There are many livery stables on Long Island that offer riding opportunities. For a birdwatcher, there are yellow-bellied sapsuckers and scarlet tanagers flying among the trees. Small animals scurry through the brush alongside the trails.

The livery horses are well trained and gentle and easy to handle. They will be suitable for both children and adults. They follow the guide in an orderly line. When the riders are sufficiently skilled at riding, the guide will allow them to trot over the trails.

Horseback riding is a wonderful activity for children, families and couples. It is a way to connect with these beautiful animals and nature at the same time. It is a vacation, or regular weekend activity enjoyed by many on trail rides during all seasons.
