Taking A Look At How To Make A Quilt

By Joanna Walsh

An ancient art form, quilting was limited to particular communities. Out of necessity, folks learned how to make a quilt and it slowly evolved and became a profession. There are a number of art schools that now recognize the craft as a form of art. Those who want to learn to create these works of art will need to learn some basics.

The art of quilting has existed for centuries. In Europe during the twelfth century, quilts were made to be worn underneath armor. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century United States, women were too busy making clothes for their family. Only the wealthy women had enough leisure time for making quilts.

Making a quilt is done at an industrial or domestic level. The individual interested in learning this art needs to gain knowledge of style, color, fabrics, and quilting tools and kits. Having even the slightest understanding of the aspects of quilting will help you learn to create one of these works of art.

It should be understood that the quilts style and character represents an occasion or place. Having an understanding of a specific subject will help you develop your own unique style. By developing your own style you can create a district identity. This is important since quilting is a form of art.

Subjects for these pieces of art include memory quilts that are based on family events, photo quilts based on pictures, and Christmas quilts. There are also pieces that originated from or are related to various people. A very popular style, the scrap quilt, uses scrap pieces of fabric. The works can be hung on walls as decorations or used as throws or comforters.

When selecting the fabric for the base of the quilt it is important that it be colorfast. Before you use the material you will need to wash it to allow any color to run out of it. The quilt is then sewn to the base fabric to create the piece. Make sure to choose fabric that is tightly woven and strong to last over the years. While cotton is considered best for the lining, materials like crepes, knits, and those that stretch, are not.

Pay attention to the colors of the quilt. Often folks do not give much consideration to the colors that they are using. For example, blue is a cool color and works well for the lining, and yellows and reds give the feel of warmth. If you use a white fabric for the lining it will brighten and black is often used for subdued effects.

Beginners will do well to use kits that can be purchased. The kits are offered as blocks that can be purchased one at a time. Buying one block a month is a great way for someone just learning to easily master the art of quilting. Kits will include the necessary information to create a quilt in very simple form. They offer guidelines for designs, fabric, and color. Other kits are available for the experienced quilter for convenience. These kits typically include blocks for creating comforters, pillow cases, and rugs.
