Things To Do In Asuncion In Paraguay

By Jonny Blair

This is a list of the 5 best things to do in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Forget places like Rio, Buenos Aires and La Paz and head to a proper off the beaten track South American city. Paraguay's capital city of Asuncion is a great place to escape the tourists. It offers a host of great things to see and do and you should check it out!

1. Head to the first ever train station in South America

Asuncion housed South America's first ever train station and instead of destroying it when it wasn't needed, they have turned it into a museum. This is a great place to head to and reminisce and relax! Plus you're one of very few tourists so you will have the whole place to yourself!

2. Slums and Argentina

Asuncion has some very run down areas, and these slums are down by the riverside. The slums are cool to look at in the day time but at night it's not really recommended. You can stare across at Argentina as Paraguay borders it. A river separates Asuncion from Argentina. You can boat or bus it across to another country if you like.

3. Reminisce about Jose Luis Chilavert

As a keen football fan it's a great idea to check out the football stadium in every city you visit. Paraguay's national stadium is in Asuncion and is called Estadio Defensores del Chaco. It's really worth a trip out to. This is a small country which has punched above its weight and even reached the World Cup Quarter Finals a few times. The stadium is easily reached by bus and is very big.

4. Old Buildings and Heroes Square

Paraguay, like most countries has a history of war and this is remembered by the monuments and plaques in Heroes Square. It's worth a visit and Paraguay also has a lot of army around them.

After checking out the Heroes Square and monuments don't forget that Asuncion has lots of other cool old buildings to check out including Churches, a Palace, a Cathedral and old style skyscrapers.

5. Go for a night out!

If you're in Asuncion it would seem ridiculous not to visit some bars and you'll be pleased to know it has some great pubs, a relaxed attitude and a good nightlife. Some bars serve good food, have special shots, their own beer and even live music. This is an unusual capital city to party in.
