Plan A Door County Bike Tour This Year

By Christine Fisher

Planning a vacation usually starts months in advance for most people. Many decisions have to be made before they feel comfortable that everything will fall safely into place when they get to their chosen destination. The same is true if you decide to embark on a Door County bike tour. While some may be comfortable cycling here and there without any particular goal or plan, others will be much happier deciding in detail when and where they want to go.

Wisconsin is an amazing state with an abundance of natural beauty from south to north. It is also a state where one needs to take into account the weather patterns inherent to its location. If you are bicycling, the summer months seem the most conducive to success. It should not be too hot or too cold during this time and most attractions will be open and accessible to visitors.

Sturgeon Bay is the county seat of Door and a quaint town worth checking out. It has plenty of shoreline that makes for great fishing, hiking, and biking. You can explore the town itself which boosts a great maritime museum and excellent art galleries featuring local and national artisans, good restaurants and historical sites.

Cana Island Lighthouse is located in Bailey's Harbor just to the north of Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor. Once you have cycled up there you can treat yourself to a good look around if you are willing to climb the spiral stairs to the gallery deck. A spectacular view of Lake Michigan and Door Peninsula will make the trek worth it. Apparently water boots are sometimes needed. It would be best to call ahead to find out exactly what the conditions are like.

While you are visiting Bailey's Harbor you should check out Kangaroo Lake. It is the largest lake in Door County and the views are incredible. If you want to explore the preserves however, you should be aware that there are no restrooms, trash cans, or water available. The area is carefully preserved and a wonderful place to photograph the extensive wildlife. You may even want to stay for the night at one of the housekeeping cottages.

Ellison's Bay is on the northern tip of Door Peninsula and this is where you will find Newport State Park, the only wilderness designated park in the State of Wisconsin. You can decide which of the off road biking trails you want to explore. Be sure to do your homework before you go though. Not all trails are accessible to bikes.

The county is known for its cherries and mid-summer is perfect cherry picking time. There are plenty of orchards happy to allow you to gather all of the cherries you can. They provide the pails. You provide the labor. Once again, it is a good idea to call ahead just to make you are not disappointed when you get to a particular orchard.

Cycling your way around this area will really allow you to take full advantage of all the natural beauty it possesses. It will create great memories and great stories for you to tell your family and friends for years to come.
