Madison is always the starting point for most tours. The two renowned lakes in the area, Monona and Mendota, have miles of trails by their shores. Sailors, paddle boarders and kayakers flock these lakes regularly. In the summer months, the surrounding campgrounds get flocked with campers.

The trails usually lead to the countryside. It is common for cyclists to stop midway to snap photos of the numerous rolling farms and red barns. Many cyclists like to regroup and rest at the popular Edgewater Hotel. The hotel is situated at a vantage point that gives guests uninterrupted views of the imposing Capitol Dome and Lake Mendota.

New Glarus, a few miles out from Madison, is the creme of bicycling spots in the state. It was started in 1845 by Swiss immigrants. Its farms, hills and grazing cattle are always breathtaking to watch. The streets in the town are quite and lined with Swiss museums and chalets. There is a popular brew pub at the southern end of this lovely town.

The Madison city skyline is clearly visible from the town. There is an excellent road network that connects it to the city. Despite the low traffic on the roads, cyclists are always encouraged to cycle on the shoulder of the road. There are plenty of restaurants in town for a quick afternoon meal after a lengthy ride.

To the east of town are lakeside communities, rolling ridge lines and open prairies. Glacial forces are largely attributed to the formation of the breathtaking landscape. Aztalan is the most crucial archeological site in the locality. It has remains that go as far back as 1000 AD. You should certainly stop by and check the area out.

Few visitors ever leave without checking Lake Geneva. Bogs and forests surround this magical water body. You should watch where you cycle through closely to avoid injury. The lake shore and surrounding areas are full of restaurants that you can hop into for a quick delicious bite.
