By Ronald Hughes

Beauty is something that many homeowners and garden owners always strive to achieve. Making the home or garden lively is not an easy thing to achieve, although there are many ways to do it. Some plant nice-looking flowers and install statues. However, one of the best ways to add both life and beauty is to make topiaries. Topiaries are works of art that involve shaping plants into various shapes.

This piece of art traces its origin to the old civilizations including the Greek and Roman empires. Currently, there are a lot of people using this art thus it has developed greatly. There has been an increase in tools and equipment used in topiary as well as the number of plants. The most commonly used plant is the ivy because it can easily be shaped. Thus, ivy topiary is very common.

Apart from ivy, other small-leaved plants eligible for this work exist in numerous numbers. Cypress, lavender, tea leaf, cedar, podocarpus, and boxwood are examples. The suitability of abovementioned plants differs, with some being better than others. The type of shape required to be achieved normally determines the suitability of a plant. Therefore, to achieve a specific shape, a suitable plant must be used.

Shaping needs to be done regularly for the best results to be achieved. The type of plant used will determine the interval of time one will take to perform shaping. The time interval should be enough to ensure the plant has time for the leaves to build up. The plant gets destroyed when it is shaped regularly with no time for leaves to regrow.

Some people are so talented in this art that they shape the plants without much struggle. Such people usually have a lot of experience gained from several years of working. Beginners usually have some trouble achieving the right shapes. As one engages in the exercise more, they get used to it and their work starts to improve. Beginners should use pre-fabricated shapes to help with attaining the right shapes they need.

When the plant is planted in deep, fertile soil that is well-drained, it makes it very easy to get best outcomes. Water-logging should be allowed to occur because it may kill the plant. The area the soil is grown needs to be sheltered in part too. Watering should be done if necessary to prevent the soil from ever drying.

It is also important to ensure fertilizer is provided to the plant when there is need. One can observe the plant leaves to detect lack of nutrients. This is indicated by cream colored leaves. The plant should be weeded and an insecticide sprayed frequently to keep away harmful insects and organisms.

Finally, proper tools need to be applied when shaping is done. The condition of the tools should be observed too. For example, to prevent damaging young branches and leaves, shears employed need to be sharpened well. When unsure about what to do, finding advice from a qualified expert on what to do is advisable.
