Sweet Facts About Ginger Lilies

Plants are like newborn babies who need special care and attention. Some of them could be so frail but really beautiful that extra effort is also given to make sure that they will grow properly. Ginger lilies are one of these plants that is raised not only for its simple appearance, but for the astounding scent it produces.

As its name implies, it is really a cousin of the ever useful kitchen ingredient, the ginger plant. They have the same root like projections called rhizomes, and it grows much like it by running it roots under the soil. There are nodes on its side, and pick one that points out the most to make it the stem.

Like its ever health useful cousin, these grow from underground stems under the surface of the soil. You can easily tell which part should be up because there are nodes in the sides. Choose one that is prominent among the rest and with a pot of soil plus tons of love, you can have your own in a matter of days.

As mentioned earlier, there are many types of flowers coming from different varieties of this plant, but the specie which is most likely being sought is the one which produces a butterfly shaped one. This Asian native plant may look fragile, but it is actually a sturdy plant which everybody can rely to stand up even weigh down by its numerous flowers. If planted on frosty soil, it will just wilt its buds but comes back to life in the spring in which you need to prune its darkening tips.

They grow best in partially shaded areas, but if none are available, an area with enough sunlight will do just fine. One thing to remember about the latter condition is that you need to transfer it to a shaded area in hot afternoons, as the heat will make the leaves curl up. If you place them in pots, make sure that they have enough space to spread out.

They need to be watered always and you may put some organic fertilizer if you want. Most likely they would thrive most in acidic, moist soil as they could not withstand a surrounding with high temperatures and strong winds. Though its roots are deep in the soil, they need to be continuously nourished.

However frail they appear to be, these plants have properties which seem to make pests and other insects repugnant for them. In fact, it is reported that it has natural oils which act as repellants, so you would need not to worry about the latter. If animals do come nearer to them, it would only do so because of the sweet smelling scent it emits.

These plants are reputed to have natural oils which have insecticide properties, so these can be helpful to keep pest away from other plants. You may put some inside the house or at your garden table to repel those nasty mosquitoes. However, be prepared for cats, dogs and even some species of birds to come near the plants because they are attracted by the smell just like you do.

Each variety of this plant share a common characteristic of having a decadent scent that even animals would be attracted to it. There are some who will grow up to a knee length height, while there are others which can reach the height of at least six feet tall. Whichever type they are, these are so much sought after by collectors because of their uniqueness and beauty.
