Buying A Midge Head Net

By Patricia Murphy

In most places, when the humidity in the air rises, you will start to notice insects flying and crawling, everywhere you go. Most people are not bothered by them, until they start crawling into your food, or flying into your face. If the latter scenario keeps happening to you, then you need to get a good midge head net. Every company making these items will claim that theirs is the best, and here are some pointers to ensure you get on that will work for you.

For you to keep the insects out of your mouth, nose, and eyes, you need to have something with very fine meshing. This means that the net should be so fine, that it looks like regular clothing. This way, even the smallest of insects will not be able to go through it. The holes, however, should still allow you to breathe comfortably, otherwise you will get claustrophobic.

The next thing you should do is look at the material of the hat and the mesh. For humid areas, cotton headgear is the best because it will absorb perspiration. However, unless the fabric is very light, it might make the whole thing a bit bulky. In case you have very sensitive skin, look for a net made of polyester or a polyester blend, to reduce the possibility of an allergic reaction.

You will find that these hats come in different sizes. Therefore, do not blindly assume that it will fit you before you try it on. Some of them will have elastic at the edge of the mesh, to keep them in place. Trying it on will prevent you from buying something that chokes you, or that leaves spaces, through which the insects can enter.

One individual may want a midge hat that looks like a baseball cap, while another may prefer one that resembles a fedora. As long as you know what you want, finding it will not be that difficult. There are a variety of designs to choose from, stemming from the fact that various companies produce these items.

You will find that most of these midge nets do not cost more than five dollars. Sometimes, what may make them expensive is the design of the hat to which the mesh is attached, or the chemical used to treat it.

The availability of these items varies from one place to another, depending on the climate and the dominant insects in an area. However, if you find that you cannot locate a midge net you like, in your town, shop online. A store in a different town may stock what you want and can ship it to you after you make the purchase.

Since you will wear these items outside, you may need to clean them even if it is once every few months. For those that are pretreated, check to see the instruction on the cleaning process. If you own a regular midge net, use warm soapy water to hand wash it gently.
