How Important Is Light In Digital Photography

By Bernard Morris

With the recent developments in digital photography, many people nowadays have found it easier to take pictures. Advancements in the field of photography have given hobbyists and professional photographers alike the opportunity to experiment to deliver quality photographic images. But among other factors, photographers have to develop their ability to use and manipulate light when taking photos. Light, after all, is the most crucial element in photography.

To create dramatic effects, photographers usually prefer conducting photo shoots during the morning and before the dusk. However, for indoor, underwater or nighttime photo shoots, you can make use of artificial lighting to produce dramatic effects. You can also use different kinds of lighting equipment to achieve the effect you desire.

Video Lighting For Various Types Of Photography

Weddings are one of the greatest occasions in which photography can be of much use. To create images with a romantic feel for the couple, a video light can be used. Unlike flash which gives a strong and unflattering light effect, video lighting is ideal for studio portraits. A video light is perfectly suitable to brighten up a dim location for photo shoots as well as huge studios, as it offers a wide range of illumination.

Lighting is important in underwater photography as well, especially in taking photos some metres below the ocean surface. With a handheld underwater video light, you can easily illuminate the surroundings and capture the real colours of fishes, corals and crustaceans.

Other Photography Techniques Using Video Light

Though video lights create very strong light at maximum capacity, you can easily adjust its level of lighting. You can place a gel in front of an LED video light to create a warm or tungsten effect. For soft photo effects, you can control the diffuser which is commonly present in LED video lights. Take note that this lighting equipment is compatible with other lighting equipment such as flashguns and speed lights which you can use for certain photography techniques.

To explore other effects it can give, you can try placing the equipment in various locations during the photo shoot. For example, if you want flare in the photo you can place it beneath your subject and move to a position where the edge of the light slightly appears in your camera.
