Moving? Here Are Some Helpful Tips

By Joyce McIntosh

While you might be moving into a great new house or relocating to a fantastic new city or town, the actual details of moving can cause a good amount of stress. If your moving date is approaching, think about following a few of these helpful suggestions.

Organization is key and one way to stay organized and focused is by creating a comprehensive list of all the tasks you need to accomplish. Place the tasks in various categories, such as one with the heading of "Utilities." This will include items such as turning off electricity, gas, water, trash and cable at the old address and starting up all of these services at specific date at your new address.

Changing your address is very important, and not only should you head down to the post office and fill out a change of address form, you also need to personally call many companies or offices and inform them of the change. This includes any company that bills you, such as credit card companies, doctors' offices and any magazines to which you subscribe. If the move takes you fairly far from home, you also need to ask health professionals for medical records and get school records for your children or yourself. It's far easier to accomplish these tasks before you move than when you are hundreds of miles away.

A huge part of moving is the packing, and this can seem like an overwhelming burden, particularly if you wait until the last minute. Begin packing as soon as you can by boxing up any item that you rarely use, such as holiday items, the majority of your books and DVDs, photographs, framed pictures and artwork and anything else that gets little use. Be sure to label all these items clearly, as this makes moving in much easier. It's also wise to think about donating or throwing away items that you don't need any more. The less you have to move, the better, so weed out those old clothes, toss the old magazines and get rid of books and toys that are no longer used. To save some cash, ask friends or your neighbors if they will save their newspapers for you to use as packing materials and look for free boxes on websites such as Freecycle.org and the free section of your local Craigslist.

It often occurs that your moving out date does not coincide with your move-in date, and if it is just a day or two, you might find that the new owners or landlords are agreeable to allowing you to stay an extra couple of days. If the discrepancy will consist of several weeks or months, you will need to find an East Lansing or Bath self-storage company where you can place the majority of your furnishings and other items. Be sure to find a company that allows you to rent the unit by the month and doesn't require a multi-month or yearly contract. Some companies also allow weekly leasing, which can be a great option.

In addition to monthly or weekly options, it is wise to find a place that does not require a security deposit and one that allows you to have access to your belongings 24 hours a day. Security monitors also should be on the premises, and you need to find a facility that is well lit and fenced in. If you are a student, a senior citizen or a member of the U.S. military, you should ask whether or not there are discounts for people in these categories.
