Silk Ribbon Embroidery Is A Fun Hobby That Produces Beautiful Results

By Essie Osborn

Learning needle-arts can be very rewarding. A variation of standard embroidery which uses colorful, cotton floss, silk ribbon embroidery also incorporates ribbon into its beautifully crafted designs. It's actually quite easy to learn this technique and it's a great way to not only pass time, but also to add that special touch to ordinary sewing projects.

Given it's uncomplicated nature, this type of needlework is easy enough for even a child to learn. The stitches are very straightforward and only basic supplies are required. Even someone who has never done any kind of work like this before should have no problem mastering it in a short time. It isn't tricky or frustrating and most people who do it end up finishing the projects they start.

How one chooses to learn this method of embroidery depends on his or her personal preference and learning style since it is taught in a variety of ways. One may attend a sewing class, learn from an instructional guide, or watch an online video tutorial which shows each step being done and can be played back if necessary until one gets the concept.

The first step is to select a pattern, simpler designs are recommended for beginners. Next, one will need to assemble all necessary supplies required to complete the project. Specific patterns will list the specific colors of thread which are needed, but others can be substituted if desired. Generally the following are necessary an embroidery hoop, tracing paper, marking pencils, small, sharp scissors, pincushion, embroidery floss, and silk ribbon, the 4 millimeter size is most commonly used.

The best type of needle for this kind of stitching are chenille needles, which have sharp tips and larger eyes. Pre-threading a few of these with the suitable thread colors is a good idea that will save time and having to re-thread the same needle repeatedly. If beadwork is added, a long applique, size 12, beading needles will work well.

Although pretty much any type of material can be used for embroidery, it must not be so thick that the needle cannot pass through. A size 13 needle will make sewing on denser fabrics less challenging. Knits can be used but it's best to sew some interfacing onto their wrong side for more stability. One should always opt for pure silk ribbon over synthetic types since it looks much nicer and it's easier to work with.

Laundering completed projects must be done with caution as to not ruin them. It is highly advisable to pre-wash the silk ribbon before use since the dyes inside it may bleed out when wet, causing damage. In doing so, there should be no problem hand-washing the stitched item in cold water with mild soap. Ironing can be done, as long as only minimal pressure and a low heat setting are used.

What's nice about this method of embroidery is that anyone, young or old, female or male can learn and become accomplished at it. It is a great way to create unique, creative expression through beautiful finished pieces one can keep for years. The other thing many people appreciate about it is that it is easy to correct any mistakes.
