By Steven Martin

Mountain rescues refer to activities of search and rescue that takes place in mountainous areas. This also refers to mountains that have a rope access, like avalanches, ice, snow, glaciers, crevasses, and alpine environment. Then difficulty of doing rescues in these kind of areas has lead to the development of many equipment and techniques.

In these kind of areas, people use helicopters to easily find victims and also to remove them from where they are. Dogs are also used to search for missing victims. So for you to become a volunteer or you want to become a professional in this type of job, mountain rescue training are offered by many organizations and teams. Paid rescue services usually happens in high mountain areas like ski resorts.

But most units are often voluntary teams, this is because it only happens occasionally and that it needs specific techniques with local knowledge that are required in some environments. These teams are usually made up of local climbers and local guides.

Paid services do usually work cooperatively with voluntary teams. This would also mean that those paid helicopters can also work with voluntary teams. Mountain rescues are usually free, only a few organizations will ask for charges for the service.

Anyone can be able to join a team for as long as you are really determined to help and if you do not easily get nervous. So for you to join, first step is to ask the local teams and speak to them. By talking to some members of a team, you might be able to get the chance of knowing the procedures for joining in their team.

Another is try to determine the skills you already possess. Most organizations will be assessing you skills through interviews, practical assessments, and probationary periods before trainings. And the most important thing is you need to know and understand what the job is really up to. And through this, you will know more about the team, about the things that you want to volunteer for, and the expectation of the team from you.

Fourth is you have to let your family know and also your employer. Even if the job seems to be very exciting for you, but you cannot just let your family be worried. Though your attendance is not really compulsory to completed, but it will be monitored especially on trainings. This is one thing that you can prove them whether if you are a valuable team member or not.

This is an expensive kind of rescue, for the reason that you need to purchase your own paraphernalia and kits. These include clothing for your protection such as harnesses and helmets. Other materials needed are backpacks, boots, and head torches. One important thing is you have to be patient. Do not be frustrated if ever you have not been called yet though you already passed all necessary trainings. In situations like this, you just have to wait, because the team may have thought of something more from you.

Lastly is always be prepared because you will be taken into a high level training in the future. These are the technical skills. You must study on water and rope rescue, advanced first aid procedures, and mathematics and statistics for missing persons.
