Choosing Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours

By Yesenia Terry

There may be some things or places that have made an impression on you leading you to classify them as grand. Real grandeur though is the views you get aboard Grand Canyon helicopter tours. The imagery you get when hovering over the Grand Canyon compares to nothing else. The compliment of grandeur can rightly be bestowed on this panorama.

A number of tour companies offer the tours. The various companies start their tours from different departure points and have varying itineraries. Some will start from the North Rim, others from the Southern One and others from the Las Vegas Terminal. There are a number of other options of departure points.

The duration of the different flights also differ. Some are as short as 15 minutes, others are a bit longer, lasting 30 minutes and others will go on for 45 minutes to an hour. Most popular are helicopters that allow for clear views with no obstructions. Some flights talk passengers through the tour with multi-lingual narrations. This may be done with music as well, that comes from headphones.

One flight option is one that starts from the North side. The tour goes over the yawning Dragon Corridor which is the widest and the deepest part of this place. Also visible is the Tower of Ra, a mini-mountain that was named after the Egyptian god of the sun in the 1800s. It stands at 6,076 feet and is one of other shapes, more than a billion years old that have naturally formed and resemble temples and shrines. There are also stunning view of the Colorado River and the Black Canyon.

Flying from the Vegas Strip is another option. Sights to be enjoyed on this circuit include the Red Rock mountain, Mt. Charleston and the bordering mountain ranges. The view also includes the grandiose resorts and hotels in the area, lush green golf courses and world renowned pools. Other spectacular sights are the Nellis Air Force Base, Downtown Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Speedway. Flights over the strip are mostly short, going for 12 to 15 minutes. There are day and night flights.

The other choice of route is to take off from the Southwest and from this direction, attractions are Fortification Hill, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead among others. This route also includes going down into the gaping heart of the mountain to a depth of 3,500 feet. Some tours include a landing 300 feet above the Colorado River as well. The journey back to the South Las Vegas Valley will give a sight of the Black Canyon.

Make your choice of Grand Canyon helicopter tours in accordance to your budget which will determine flight duration and the tour company you will fly. Whichever way you go, as long as you are going up over the mountain, it will be a sight you will not soon forget.
