Young makes Manchester move official

By Ben Williams

Premier League champions Manchester United have signed winger Ashley Young from fellow league side Aston Villa after persuading the 25-year-old to agree a deal worth in the region of 17 million pounds. The player will now turn out for Sir Alex Ferguson's side for five years at the very least, with United fans hopeful in light of that fact that Young will be able to hand his new club the best years of his career.

The move came after months of speculation regarding the player's future, with Young staying loyal to Villa for several years after he came to the public imagination with a number of stunning performances on the wing following his move from English football minnows Watford. With news of United's interest in him after four and a half years with Villa, though, came a desire for a bigger challenge, and playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world was an opportunity Young simply could not turn down.

A man who knows the player very well on a personal and professional level, former Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd, has revealed that the Premier League champions will find a prize asset in the form of their new signing, who is thought to be always desperate to improve his game and understanding of his team mates wherever possible.

Meanwhile, for the Red Devils themselves, the arrival of Young is just one more sign that the club are trying to do all they can to add a couple of fresh faces to a squad that, although successful last season in terms of winning the league, found themselves accused a number of times of looking tired and jaded in a few positions. Young is the club's second signing of the current transfer window after former Blackburn defender Phil Jones was signed, and the new arrivals probably won't end there, with the United boss likely to appoint one or two others before the start of next season.

High up on Ferguson's list of potential new signings is David de Gea, Atletico Madrid's talented young shot-stopper, whom many football experts believe could represent an effective replacement for the now retired former United goalkeeper Dutchman Edwin van der Sar. The young goalkeeper is, however, yet to agree anything with Manchester United, so at the moment the club's fans will simply have to feel satisfied with the incoming Young.
