Simple Ways To Invoke The Western Decor Feeling Into Your Home Decor

By Chuck Benderfil

When trying to theme your living spaces with a western decor, one of the spaces you'll need to fill is your walls. As you look through western decor catalogs, you'll see a huge variety of items you can display on your walls. But how do you combine them into an pleasing design? Read on for the answer.

WALLS

First, let's look at the walls themselves. What is their makeup? Drywall? Wood Paneling? Perhaps a wooden waynescoating on the bottom with drywall on top? Maybe they are stone? The wall material you're trying to decorate will determine to a large degree the types and styles of items you'll display. I'll take a look at all three here.

If you're working on a wooden wall, always consider the color and texture of that wood. The desirable look is contrast. If you're wood is light colored, go with a darker accent such as a dark bronze sculpture, dark framed paintings, or another dark display item. The reverse is also valid. Lighter items will show up better on darker walls. Also consider the texture of the wood. If it's rustic looking, keep your decor similar and go with rustic art. On the other hand, well polished wooden paneling has a more formal modern look and western artwork with a more contemporary feel most likely will better fit the theme.

Drywall is the most widely used wall make-up so if you're walls are drywall, you'll have the most choice. Since drywall has to be painted, contemplate western hues inspired by nature such as browns, tans, greens and the like. Thinking outside the box, even blue is a great choice. One of my most admired color combinations is a sage green with deep navy blue accents. Excellent look for a western decor. As you plan the color scheme of the room, be sure to hang artwork that complements but also contrasts with the paint colors.

The least common material for walls is stone, but it is one of the most beautiful. If none of your walls are stone, how about adding a stone accent wall with various rustic wooden wall hangings or even an animal head or fishing and hunting gear. Keep in mind not all items will look good on stone. You'll need to experiment to find a pleasing look.

WALL HANGINGS

There is such a plethora of wall art accessories listed in catalogs to buy, you're head will be swimming with ideas. From western photos or paintings, to candle holders, plant stands, hanging cloth tapestries with western scenes, lighting accessories and a whole lot more. Once you start looking, you will have no shortage of design concepts.

As you're planning, keep in mind the design principle of combining items in odd numbers. Wall displays look great with items arranged together. As you're planning, vary the display on each wall. Don't use pairings that are similar on each and every wall. In addition, don't group the same number of items on all walls. Variety is key for a pleasing design.

ERRORS MADE OFTEN

1. Stay aware from hanging the same objects on all walls in the same room. For instance, if one wall displays a painting, don't hang paintings on every other wall and in every open space. Similarly, if you are combining items on one wall, don't group items on each and every open spot. Variety is the key here. For instance, if you hang a large painting on one wall, group 5 smaller items on an opposing wall and add a metal sculpture on the third.

2. One design error I see quite often is hanging artwork that is too small for the space. Although years ago this was common modern decor uses artwork that FILLS a space, making a statement and creating a focal point in the room. Most people will want to keep this in mind.

There are loads of options out there when it comes to decorating walls with western decor art. Once you start looking, you'll discover a huge selection of items to purchase, an even greater selection of photos to browse, and some inspired motivation once you discover everything that's available..
