What To Pack In Your Disaster Survival Kits

By Muriel Noel

It is important to have disaster survival kits ready before tragedy strikes. Many people think they will never have to face a disaster. While you certainly do not want to be pessimistic, you also do not want to be caught unprepared.

The thing to keep in mind is that the services that you count on every day may not be available to you. There may not be water, electricity, or telephone service. The consensus is that you should be prepared to live self-sufficiently without these and other services for a minimum of three days.

Preparing a survival kit is your best option in an emergency scenario. Common sense dictates stockpiling first aid, water, and food. Can openers and other utensils for preparing and eating food are also obvious choices. Having a method of disposing waste will also be indispensable; include toilet paper, hand sanitizer, bleach, heavy-duty plastic bags and a plastic bucket with a tight fitting lid. Stay up-to-date with the latest information with a battery powered radio.

Tools, bungee cords, and pet supplies also cannot be overlooked. Be sure to have flashlights and extra batteries. Sleeping bags or extra blankets may become necessary.

Some items needed in an emergency are just as important, but easier to overlook. You will want to have personal identification, a list of ready phone numbers, and other important papers in sealed plastic bags. Add a photo of each member of the family, including pets.

Portable disaster survival kits are key to safety if your area is evacuated. Besides other helpful items described here, it is critical to have a local map available as well as a contact number for a person living outside of the affected area who can coordinate calls from everyone in the family. Listed drug allergies or additional crucial medical information must be in the personal portable bags with appropriate identification. Each person should carry a copy of the house key, the auto key, and some petty cash.
