Things To Know About Spun Glass Figurines

By Carmella Watts

For people looking to purchase something a little special for loved ones or even for themselves, spun glass figurines could be the perfect gift. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as as themes. Among the many themes you can get are angels, mythical people, and even animals.

To some the figures might be inanimate and with no real value other than monetary, but to others they might be so much more than that. For many they are collectors items that have been handed down through an entire family over many years. Often they bring back memories of childhood. The purpose of these collections isn't necessarily to have valuable items, it could be a way of storing the memories of the family and passing the story of the collection down to each member.

The products are made by heating glass rods and by stretching a bending them before allowing the material to harden and cool. They come in a wide array of colors, or can even be left clear. The finished product really depends on whether the item to be made would look better as a clear object or in color. The products are only limited by the imagination of the artist designing them and of course the intentions behind the design.

There are very few limits to what can be made. For instance, people can have angels, fairies, elves, dragons, and other types of fantasy figures. The most popular pieces are sometimes based on fairy tales, with things like Cinderella being quite popular. A figure of Snow White eating the apple is also one of the more popular items.

People not particularly familiar with the types of designs and decorations on the figures may not have heard of filigree, the old art of decorative metalwork. The art is believed to have started on Europe in medieval times and spread to the rest of the world. Usually made of gold or silver, it involves metal being soldered and then bent and twisted into shapes. These shapes are often used to decorate the figures, adding, say, jewelry to female figures.

People give them as gifts on many different occasions. Among the most popular occasions are new babies, anniversary gifts, and for birthdays. They are versatile enough to be given as more than ornaments and can be crafted into either a bouquet of flowers or just one single flower.

They really need to be taken good care of because they are usually not very durable. When dropped they will most likely break, plus they can become extremely dusty when not stored in a display cabinet. The easiest way to get rid of dust would be to purchase a good quality dust brush, perhaps one made of feathers, always making sure you do the job carefully, especially with pieces that have intricate designs. The dirtiest items might be better off being washed in a soapy solution.

Spun glass figurines are suitable for a variety of occasions and come in many colors, shapes and sizes. They make ideal gifts for just about anyone and, even yourself. They'll last for a long time if looked after and most people will find one that fits their price range.
