Shopping At Native American Stores

By Daphne Bowen

In the past decade or so there has been a huge movement towards supporting local craftsmen and women. These are people who are trying to make a living producing beautiful and unique items. Many work from their own homes and spend many long hours each week working. For many the skills they learned from their parents are already many generations old and have been passed down through the years.

The retail market has never been so competitive as it is today. One of the best new branches to join the ranks of retail outlets are native American stores. These are shops that sell crafts, artifacts, jewelry and artwork created by members of the indigenous population. It is clear that each piece has a story behind it and has been lovingly crafted by someone who really cares about what they do.

It is also possible to shop at a native owned store on line. In order to be competitive in today's economy it is essential to have on line outlets too. This allows people from all over the world to access the merchandise and become customers. It also generates much bigger markets for the vendors and can really change the dynamics of their sales.

Each part of the country has its own ways of doing things. For example, the Pacific northwest is famous for its totem poles. These incredible structures are craved from huge trees and create a stunning visual display. Smaller versions are made for sale in local stores. This means that people all over the country can own their own piece of history. Each one is truly a work of art and decorated in beautiful colors. Many people buy a totem pole as a unique piece of art for their front yard and it makes a great present for that friend who really does have everything.

There has been a renewed interested in native American arts and crafts over the past few decades. This group of people have traditionally been forgotten by many people and the achievements had been pushed to the side. However, the general public is now much more interested in learning about the history and culture of these fascinating people.

Each native group or tribe was shaped by their environment. The tribes of the desert southwest are amongst the most famous for their jewelry. Silver forms the basis of most pieces and the addition of locally mined precious stones make for a dramatic and beautiful look. The legends of the tribe are woven into their artwork and tell some amazing stories.

One of the most well known and practical items is a blanket. These are woven in the traditional way using patterns and designs that have been in use for centuries. There are a huge range of colors, styles and prices.

The native tribes of the Pacific north west have a very distinctive lifestyle and culture. The ocean is the basis of their lives. They have many creation stories that have been passed down for generations. This can be seen in their work which is now being displayed and sold in many shops throughout the country and also on line.
