A Propane Fire Pit is an Essential Camping Accessory

By Eric James

Camping and camp fires go together like fish and chips, especially during colder weather. Finding wood or hauling fire wood to the camp site can be a pain however. You can be kind of stuck if you happen upon a crowded camp site and the wood has already been scavenged by early arrivals. You can solve this problem by always making sure you pack a portable propane fire pit. You might think that this is a poor compromise but if you need heat and warmth they are a very good solution. You will actually find many advantages to using a propane fire pit burner over the traditional camp fire. First and foremost is that a portable propane fire pit doesn't require wood which can be a huge advantage when you happen to visit a very busy camp site which has been stripped bare of any useable wood. A good sized propane gas tank will last for many hours with many of the outdoor fire pits and take up much less room than firewood.

Wood fires also produce sparks so propane fire pits are safer in that regard as they don't produce any. Circling the camp fire to get away from the smoke will also not be required with a fire pit. Propane fire pits burn clean so you also miss out on all the ash and the cleaning up at the end of the night. Less work means more fun which is always a good thing. Very easy and convenient. Without all the smoke propane fire pits are also excellent for using in the back yard. Neighbors won't have to complain about the smoke that the average fire produces.

You will need to take note of a couple of things when deciding on a fire pit. Some models don't come with hoses or fittings. If you are buying online make sure you know what's in the box. There are a couple of different size fittings available so make sure you get the right ones if buying them separately. Make sure your hose is a sufficient length to get your propane gas bottle away from the flames. It's also out of the way of getting knocked over from people standing around the fire.

You may also like to take note of the heat output rating as not all fire pits are created equal. You will be using it to provide warmth so you want to make sure you are getting enough heat for everyone. A lot of propane fire pits are capable of 60,000 BTUs which is a good amount of heat. Also make sure you get the most efficient model you can afford. Weight for weight propane is a more economical fuel source than fire wood but you still want to make sure you get the most out of it.
