Why Hotels Might Affect A Holiday

By Adriana Noton

A vacation is usually one of the highlights of the year for individuals, groups and families. A year's worth of hard work, sacrifice and stress is all often made with it by the thought of taking a trip and being pampered and looked after for a couple of weeks. Many families plan such a trip to the last detail including the booking of lights, activities and hotels to ensure that nothing is left to chance.

Unfortunately, too many people book flights, reserve hotels and decide on destinations without properly investigating them. The problem many people face is that glossy vacation brochures will always portray their products in the most favorable way possible. It is in their best interests to only focus on the good things and often neglect to mention the downsides of certain locations and accommodation.

The most important decision to make when planning an annual vacation is where to visit. Once this has been decided, accommodation has to be selected. It is all too common for people to select a hotel quickly without some proper research into the facilities and quality. Decisions on a place to stay are usually based solely on cost.

These are tough times and cost is now a factor more than at any other time in the last twenty years. However, cost should not be the only contributing factor in the choice of hotels. The first stage should be to decide on what is required from the hotel. Is a swimming pool important? Do members of the group wish to make use of gym facilities?

It is also important to find out in advance about the facilities within the rooms. Lots of people require clothes pressing equipment or coffee making facilities. Particular sleeping arrangements may be the most important factor in choosing the right accommodation. Some hotels have king size beds, others have extra large rooms for larger families. Many rooms have personal safes and mini bars but many don't so it is essential that some proper research is undertaken before any money is parted with.

For many people, entertainment is crucial to the enjoyment of the holiday and the traveling group should decide on their requirements before selecting hotels. Hotels sometimes offer entertainment in the form of live signers, karaoke, video games and children's activities. Many rooms now offer DVD players, pay movies and Wi-Fi access. Night times in particular will be important so those with children will do well to check that there are things to keep them occupied.

Unfortunately, the brochures and websites of tour operators will reveal only what the companies want people to read. For a more accurate and honest account of what a vacation might offer, there are several review sites that allow normal vacationers to describe their stay in particular hotels in some detail. There are often also rating systems that give people an indications of a hotel's performance against a number of criteria.

Some review websites also double up as places to book a vacation. This can save not only time, but in many cases money with exclusive online discounts often available. The use of such a websites as a planning tool can end up giving people the reassurance they need to be confident that a vacation meets all their requirements and will be enjoyed by the whole group.
