Take A Family Road Trip For The Holidays

By Harold Spencer

Air travel has become so popular, that many people have forgotten the joys of taking a family road trip. Traveling by car allows you to become more familiar with your own country, since you will need to discover different routes and break into territories you have never visited before. Your country has a lot to offer, and traveling by car can help you discover what it is. Since you are able to customize your route, you can include different things you want to see in it. However, there are some things you should be aware of before you go.

You need to have a plan to ensure a good road trip. Make sure you take plenty of time to decide which route you will use. It's important that you create a flexible route, in case you want to add an attraction at the last minute. It's just good to have a blueprint before you get started. You can find plenty of books that can help you create a plan. Many authors have written about their trips and they share information you might find useful.

There are many books out there that cover many of the things you need to know. Many informed authors have written about the great American road trip and the routes they have taken. You can look for these books at local bookstores and at your library. Invest in comprehensive maps as well. You will need them. You stand great chances to get lost at least once.

When you plan your route, highlight the places where you would like to spend more than an hour or so. Plan where you will be staying the night, and try to decide whether you prefer to sleep in a trailer, camping ground, or hotel. Also, try to plan ahead on where you will eat. Large cities have many restaurants to offer, but it is not always the case in small roadside towns. If you don't want to spend a lot of your road budget on food, then consider packing a cooler. All you will need to do then is to stop by grocery stores along the way to replenish supplies and drinks. This will save you money and time, as you will be able to stop at any rest area picnic table to dine.

Last but not least, make sure you car is in great conditions before you go. Get a complete inspection and make sure all your stickers are current. Tell your mechanic about the long road trip you are about to take. All your fluids, belts and hoses should be checked. Keep a good check on tire pressure, since it can save you money in gas. If you are planning on driving through the desert or through a winter climate, plan accordingly. You may need extra air conditioning coolant or snow tires, depending on where you're going. And, an emergency kit is always a good idea. Road flares, a spare tire, and a tool box can be lifesavers on the road.
