Victorian Period Garments Are Exciting

By Farley Deeds

Victorian period dresses are stunning to wear. They are lovely to wear now as they were in the nineteenth century. Corsets, hats, and an umbrella embellished the outfit. Petticoats were important as they served as undergarments. They were tight to wear and forced women to breathe differently. This may have created health issues so women were probably grateful when the fashion changed.

Aristocratic women wore a lot of this fashion more than women in lower classes. This was a sign of the culture being at play. It did not mean everyone agreed with it. They just seemed to flow into it. In the nineteenth century, women's clothing was around women's legs in a puffed-up way created a very elegant look. Women liked this style even though it was difficult to wear in some ways. It was a bit constricting.

Gowns had a design such as drooping over the shoulders and had a more narrow look. The skirts down below were shaped like a bell. Women wore them day and night which made them have quite an extensive wardrobe. This was what women had to do back then. They had to conform in order to fit in.

Women also wore other accompanying attire. Velvet gloves for example were popular. In the late 1800s the designs became more simplified. Puffed out sleeves started to become popular. Later, in the 20th century, dresses gave way to jeans, skirts and other more modern forms of clothing for ladies.

In the early twentieth century, clothing was manufactured in factories while before most of them were made through seamstresses and by people in their own home. They worked on sewing machines and used patterns of their own making or someone else's designs.

The introduction of sewing machines really changed the way garments were made. It simplified it, but also made it more commercial and less personal. Clothing was now sold in stores in large bundles whereas before they would be bought on a personal level. It increased productivity and income for clothing manufacturers, but changed the way people saw themselves in their personal lives.

The industrial changes that took place involved trade offs. There were both negative and positive aspects to the changes. Now many of the older styles of clothing are revered by consumers interested in nostalgia. Some consumers also prefer the earlier dresses because they are better made in terms of durability and quality. This trade off is evaluated differently from one individual to the next, but many people are happy with the older sturdier garments.

The styles of Victorian period dresses is unmatched. They are beautiful and not hard to find online to buy or to find a pattern online to pay a seamstress or tailor to make. We can demonstrate that progress does not have to steal away productivity.
