Boating - What You Should And Should Not Do

By Bill Heath

Does it sound wonderful to have a lovely three day sail in an old boat? But first, think about these few things before you sail away.

Do check the price. Instead of sailing in one of the oldest boats in America, it may be possible to take an actual, fairly luxurious cruise.

Do find out what the size of your room on the boat is. It may be a good idea to know ahead of time that you and your partner each have a small bunk and they're not even on the same wall especially if you're hoping to have any romantic action in your cabin.

Do find out ahead of time if you and your partner can stand up in the same room on the boat. Consider other options if the answer is no.

Don't leave unless you are absolutely sure you have your luggage, so it's best to check more than once. Make sure that yours actually make it to the boat even though you carefully packed all the luggage. If not, you'll have nothing warmer than a sweatshirt and no change of clothing. So make sure you have your luggage before you leave.

Don't get on a boat where the crew is planning on having a lot of assistance from you and the rest of the paying customers. Pulling in ropes or doing your own dishes are examples of such things.

Don't consider that everything will be outlined in the brochure. During this excursion, will you ever go onto land or are you just going to ride around on the boat thinking that perhaps you've seen that same shoreline five times already. Do ask the boat crew if you will ever see any of the sea creatures promised and what about the island lobster bake?

Do ask where the shower is but don't plan on real bathroom facilities.

Don't take this kind of boat trip if you're not fond of small spaces. There is no other place to play games or cards except the galley which is also tiny and often used to fix the meals and the berth area is very small.

Do take this boat trip if you like working while on a very expensive vacation in small accommodations and maybe not see any sea life or eat the promised lobster.
