Using a Butane Lighter At High Altitudes

By Wendy Mallikarjunan

If you are planning a hiking or camping trip that will take you to high elevations, it is important that you make sure that your lighter will work at these higher altitudes. Disposable lighters do not work at high altitudes. However, butane torches will do the trick. Keep in mind that even though a butane lighter will work, it needs to be adjusted in order to compensate for the elevation. It is best to plan ahead so that you have a reliable source of fire when necessary.

Your best option in this scenario is to purchase a quality butane lighter that will be able to ignite even in environments with lower oxygen levels. Higher elevations also bring colder temperatures, another factor that decreases the functioning capabilities of lighters. For this obstacle, all you have to do is place your lighter in your pocket so that it remains warm until just before use. This will allow you to ignite it with ease. The majority of lighters simply will not light in extremely cold temps.

There is one more important step that you will need to take when traveling at high elevations. Lighters will not function when temperatures are too cold, which is often the case at high altitudes. You can easily take care of this issue by keeping your lighter in your pocket or other warm place near your body until you are ready to use it. With an increased amount of butane release and a warm lighter, it should light even at high elevations. Keep in mind that you will use up more butane than usual when the valve is opened up. Bring along extra butane just in case.

By warming and adjusting your lighter, you should have no problems igniting it at higher elevations. Whether you would like to light a cigar or cigarette, start a campfire, or need a flame for any other reason, you will be able to easily accomplish the task by following those two important steps.

Once you return from your trip and are at a lower elevation, don't forget to readjust your lighter. You will want to decrease the butane levels released to ensure safe use. Keep in mind that, when you use your lighter at a higher elevation and have adjusted the flame to compensate for lower oxygen levels, butane fluid will be consumed much more quickly. Taking along extra butane fluid, especially for longer trips, will come in handy over time.
