A Guys Hobby Is Truly A Guy Thing

By Rena Hudson

What a guy does as his hobby will often not make a lot of sense. They will collect some things at the exclusion of other things. They might kill things and they might also build things that are special to them. They may run, walk or bike and at the end of it they will eat something that does belong in the same category of taking care of their body. A guys hobby is a lot like that.

A collection of the best football or baseball cards might be on his list. They may actually be all over the house, however, it is sill his collection. That collection of beer cans from all of the most eclectic brands imaginable may be his over riding passion. That is the case even if they are not all cleaned out. In either case, comments about them not being worth anything falls on deaf ears.

Some collections makes sense such as the coin collection that might actually be worth something one day. The presence of adult magazines might not present the same future financial rewards. Being the person to have the largest ball of string might not be the best choice or activities and the ability to perform competitive eating is also not the healthiest of pastimes.

Hunting has always been a guy thing. To some, of course, it means a camp out and to to others it is a very real way of bringing home food for their families. There is also that aspect that culminates in a head being hung from the wall in the den or living room. There are great costs to this hobby and it can only be engaged in for a few weeks or a month out of each yer.

The desire by men to collect guns is something that has a ring of American culture tied up in it. The building and displaying of a model airplane, train or car is attached to the things they used to have as boys. These elements of a country that has all but been replaced by smart phones, smart cars and smart development has a place in the hearts and minds of many men.

It is not really so much the actual accumulation of stuff that is behind the hobbies men have, it is the fact of the activity. The need for men to be busy, regardless of what that activity is. Is the overriding drive for most of the hobbies, themselves. Many of them do have a purpose even if that purpose is not something that can be articulated.

The hobbies that consume so much of their time, now, will not always be a problem for you. Sky diving when they are 25 or even 40 might not be attractive to them when they have to take blood pressure medication. Building a ship in a bottle, base jumping, both of these and many more, will go by the wayside as others take over or your guy simply settles in for the duration.

That is probably why the things they do now should actually be encouraged. Unless they want to begin a hobby of robbing banks, or blowing up stadiums full of people, a guys hobby is a personal thing. They know you do not necessarily approve of it, however, tolerance is all they expect and an occasional, looks good, man.
