Vancouver Airport

By Tom Vandermore

Vancouver International Airport, also known as YVR, is located 30 minutes outside the city, and is Canada's second busiest airport. It serves 119 cities worldwide. The 2010 and 2011 Skytrax surveys ranked it the top airport in North America. Every month, more than one million travellers pass through the second-busiest airport in Canada: Vancouver International Airport. Some are residents getting away, others are visiting for business, or for a vacation in our beautiful city. Others have layovers at YVR and never see the city.

There are several options to go between YVR and downtown Vancouver, including scheduled coach transfers, limousine, taxi, car rentals and transit.

If you've got a long delay or a few hours to kill between flights, there's nothing worse than being bored and uncomfortable. But when it comes to keeping yourself entertained, YVR is really not a bad place to be stuck. The local theme of Vancouver International Airport's interior has blues and greens that reflect the colours of the land, sea and sky, in what is one of the most extensive collections of Pacific Northwest Coast Native art in the world. A great deal of carpet is found throughout the airport and large amounts of natural light come in through vast expanses of glass. The International arrivals hall, a large area where customs and immigration procedures are completed, is one of the most noticeable places for an arriving passenger. There is a large waterfall under the escalators down which passengers arrive on their way to the platform.

One of the airport's most impressive features has to be the 114,000 litre aquarium in the main atrium of the international terminal. This marine exhibit is a partnership YVR has with the Vancouver Aquarium; for most new visitors, it is the main attraction.

If you are traveling to or returning to the United States, you go through US Customs at Vancouver Airport rather than when you arrive in the United States. Therefore, arriving at your destination in the US is just like any other domestic arrival. This can add a bit of time, so you need to take this into account when planning your arrival time at the airport. You must also purchase any duty free before passing through US immigration. You will likely not be able to buy duty free upon your arrival in the US. You actually have to walk through the duty free store in order to get to US immigration.

The airfield at the Public Observation Area is entertaining, especially if you have children traveling with you. The Public Observation Area is a great place to sit back with a coffee and watch a busy airfield in action; it is located in the Domestic Terminal. An interactive map of the terminal, runways and surrounding areas is found in this space that features floor-to-ceiling windows, free telescopes, information panels, and interactive kiosks.
