Alternatives For Midway Airport Transportation

By Rena Hudson

As one of the most populous cities in the United States and a major tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers, Chicago sees a great number of people coming and going all the time. From tourists and business travelers coming in to locals heading off to other destinations, the city's two international airports are both teeming with activity every day. O'Hare, is generally more well-known than Midway but the latter is also a very busy port that hosts a great number of people daily. Whether coming in or going out through Midway, one will need to know about their choices for Midway Airport transportation.

If arriving at the airport by car, one will have to make their way to the south side of the city. From downtown, you can take Interstate 55 South and get off at the Cicero Avenue South exit. Continue to follow Cicero until you reach the airport. From the Northern suburbs, take Interstate 294 South to I-55 Northbound and exit at Cicero Avenue South as described above. If coming from the west, you can use Interstate 88 to get to I-294 then follow the directions from the North. From the south, I-294 will take you to I-55 from where you also exit at Cicero.

There are lots for short-term and for long-term parking surrounding the airport. Departing and arriving passengers may be dropped off and picked up at the terminal but waiting curbside is not permitted. When waiting for an incoming passenger it is advised to use the cell phone lot that is located just minutes away from the terminals.

Those who prefer different means of transport have a number of other choices. One convenient and economical option is to go or come via the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) trains, which are referred to locally as The El. The Orange Line goes between Midway and downtown Chicago. Service begins at 4 am and continues until 1 am daily.

Taxis are a more expensive but also more convenient option. They are generally readily available throughout the city and at the airport for arriving passengers.

Several shuttle services also serve various locations in and around Chicago. Different companies go to different areas so it's wise to inquire as to which is the proper one for where you are going. Many hotels in Chicagoland offer shuttle services for guests as well.

Regional buses are a viable alternative for anyone traveling to and from places farther away. Other locations in Illinois as well as parts of Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa have this type of bus service.

There are three main options for passengers who are transferring between Midway and O'Hare. If using a shuttle or taxi, you should allow a minimum of one hour for the trip. The CTA recommends allowing two hours when using their trains.

The options for Midway Airport transportation are numerous and varied. There should be no problem in finding a suitable way to get to and from your destination in or around Chicago.
