Helpful Moving Tips

By Joyce McIntosh

When faced with the prospect of moving, even if it's to a great new place, many people feel stressed out. While the moving process will definitely add some extra tasks and stress, it doesn't have to be a terrible experience. With some careful planning, moving can be a fairly smooth process.

Making a big checklist can be a very important first step in the moving process. You can divide up the tasks into categories. For instance, you will need to turn off utilities; cable and internet service at your old place and turn it on in the new place. Don't forget to contact other companies, such as water delivery and newspaper delivery services and inform them about the changes.

Forwarding your address is a big part of the process, as well. Temporarily, you can put in a forwarding order at the post office. However, you do need to contact anyone who sends you bills and ensure that addresses have changed. You also need to contact entities such as the department of motor vehicles, your doctors and your kids' schools. Be sure to get copies of your doctor and school records if you are moving far away. It might seem obvious, but you also need to give your employer your new address, as this shows up on certain paperwork.

While a lot of these tasks can be accomplished fairly quickly, and some even online, the big chore is really packing. It's not only time consuming, it is also expensive. Boxes and packing materials aren't cheap, so be on the lookout for freebies. You can start packing non-essential items as soon as you have a set move-out date. This includes items such as books, picture frames, decorations and anything else you don't need every day or every few days. It's also a great idea to give away anything you no longer need because not only do you not have to pack, you don't have to move it and then unpack it.

Labels and boxes go hand in hand, and you need to write the contents of each box on the sides and top, as well as what room it should go to at the new apartment or house. Get a pack of multi-colored sharpies and you can color code the boxes. You can assign a specific color to a specific room, so that people moving the boxes don't even have to give the box a second glance.

Sometimes, your new place simply isn't ready to move into on the day you have to move out of your old home. In this case, it can be necessary to look for a self-storage facility in East Lansing, West Lansing or Bath. Finding a mini storage facility isn't difficult, but you need to find one that truly suits your needs. For example, some facilities require a long-term contract and you should instead consider a company that allows you to rent by the month or perhaps by the week. A well-secured facility will have plenty of lighting, be surrounded by high fence and have cameras mounted around the facility, so be sure to look for that. It is also very handy to have 24/7 access to your belongings, so find a self-storage company that allows that type of access.
