One will need a good map that displays public recreational land. For most states, finding public hunting grounds can be done online through departments of natural resources. Whereas the maps may be sufficient, topographic atlases will provide better coverage and are also easier to use. One is able to locate public land that they may not have known, with enough detail to find them.

Distance is an important consideration. There should be a balance between the distance one can drive to and good spots for hunting. For people that are just beginning, finding locations that are not far off and have plenty of the birds is very important. Preferably, a number of grounds should be considered for back-up purposes.

The locations that one goes for should have enough cover, with prairie grass and creek bottoms. Every cover section should have plenty of hunting options. Places that are adjacent to buildings, highways or livestock should be avoided as they are likely to make it difficult to get the birds. Also to be avoided are restricted zones and areas that are not easily reachable due to presence of rivers. Areas with crops nearby are sure to have pheasants.

When it comes to the clothes used, they need to be comfortable as much as possible. This is especially so because one may have to walk very long distances and through heavy cover. In addition, the clothes should be able to provide enough warmth. Walking should be done slowly in a way that the birds can be viewed clearly. Dogs are also able to sniff around.

Dogs will be very useful. They are able to track birds with utmost precision and accuracy. Without dogs, even birds that have already been shot will be difficult to trace. The hunting should be done into the wind. Dogs used should be trained well on running techniques.

There are various pieces of equipment used in wild pheasant hunting. Every person will always have their preferred style, which makes the choice of equipment different for many. Boots used ought to be waterproof.
