How Will Project Turtle Shell Work

By Eugenia Dickerson

Regarding all the fear that is being generated by the issue of global warming one solution to the threat to mankind as a whole is project turtle shell. This concept is being put forth by Fabienne Lehmann, an architect from Germany who is deeply involved in the future of mankind and how to prevent man's extinction from consequences of extreme weather changes.

In her plan, the peoples of this planet would have to work as one and put their trust in the hands of college students to create and implement the domes and all of their contents. She has chosen college students because they are the best and the brightest of mankind and also because they are the youngest and will be the ones who live the longest. This will demand their absolute attention and resolve if they plan to survive. The final plan devised by these students would be voted on by the entire population of the world.

Hurricane force winds such as Sandy brought to the East Coast are devastating to people and property alike. Debris, as small as a shingle, can become lethal when it is traveling at more than one hundred miles per hour. There are no frame buildings that can with stand that force of wind for any length of time. These most recent storms are just the beginning according to Ms Lehmann and many scientists.

The use of fossil fuels is what created this problem so all vehicles would be electric. The actual domes would be several stories high with lower floors designed to shelter people and the upper floors used for gardens. When high winds were dangerous steel plates would lower over the myriad of windows to prevent damage from flying debris.

The idea of creating large enough gardens in the domes to feed all of humanity indefinitely is enormous. The size and number of domes and floors dedicated to the gardening would be massive. These gardens will however be capable of producing at least two harvests a year and because they will be inside there should be virtually no loss from weather or insects.

All of these measures are in response to the changes she anticipates in the future. Crops will be destroyed and famine will follow causing mass starvation. Having the crops in domes and closer to the consumer will benefit the populations because they will contain more nutrients and vitamins. The gardens could be tended permanently once introduced to the domes and food shortages would be averted.

Another aspect of her theory is the common use of the buildings when not needed for shelter. She envisions schools and other public agencies using the space for improvements in the cities. The buildings can also be used for shelter for those who have lost their homes in storms or who have ended up homeless by some other means.

Project turtle shell may be a great concept. Unfortunately the social, economic and political issues that are present may cause delays beyond time and need of use by humanity. As one answer to the fast approaching climatic disasters that will tear the planet apart this plan may offer too little too late.
