An Overview Of Various Mole Traps And How They Work

By Amanda Baird

Moles can cause quite some unpleasant damage to lawns by electing hills and tunneling underneath. For homeowners wishing to get rid of these unwelcome and troublesome guests, they can do so easily with the help of mole traps. There are various types of trappings that can be utilized in getting rid of these pests. Below is a look at the different types of traps used to catch moles.

The harpoon design is one of the first kinds of traps for ridding moles. It consists of sharp spikes that will pierce the rodents as they pass through it. Such a trap is ideal in areas having sandy and clay soils, especially if it is not rocky or contains a lot of debris. Since a harpoon trap has a very strong spring, they require someone strong to set them and exercise caution when handling them.

Another quite effective kind of mole trap is the scissors jaw. Its principle of working involves getting hold of the rodent as it tries to pass the trap, preventing it from escaping. This type is one of the easiest to design and set up.

In addition, the user can check to see if a rodent has been captured without actually removing it from the ground. It can also be used in areas with lots of rocks whereby the harpoon variety cannot be utilized. A scissors jaw trap can also be set in deeper tunnels that do not suit the harpoon trap.

Some mole traps can use the principle of a loop. The setting of this trap is done within a tunnel frequented by rodents. In the event that a rodent disturbs the soil around the loop, it will spring rapidly and tighten around the body, strangling it to death. A good thing about the trap is that it is cheap and easy to set up.

There is the possibility of using simple pitfalls to trap moles. All that needs to be done is to find a tunnel that the rodents actively pass through and then dig a large enough hole to set a container. Should a mole attempt to pass through this tunnel, it will trip and fall into any of these simple holes, making escape impossible. This method is recommended for those who would like to catch the rodents alive without causing harm to them.

A choker mole trap is constructed along similar lines to a bear trap. It is made up of two stamped metal wickets held together by a hinge on each side to form something that looks like a folding table. A large spring is suspended at the center of the hinges, together with a downward facing trigger. The metal prongs located at the devices bottom are held apart until a pin is inserted, prying them apart.

As soon as a rodent tunnel is located that runs along the surface of the ground, the trap is set to the ground in a manner that the prongs are parallel to the tunnel, and the trigger on level with the tunnel ceiling. In case the rodents go through these mole traps, their backs will brush the triggering mechanism, causing the prongs to snap together and kill them.
