The Different Aspects Of Skiing

By Celina Heath

To a lot of people, skiing is a highly pleasurable activity that can be done in a myriad of ways. Many do it as a way to have fun, and others look at it as a sport that you compete in. It is performed when skis are attached to his or her footwear and uses it to navigate downwards whilst on a snowy slope. It is done in lots of places. For example, it is quite common to be skiing in Kashmir Gulmarg.

Other than pleasure and competition, it can also serve particular functions for the military. People will also use it to travel every now and then to certain areas that have been covered by snow completely. This was the exclusive use for it until 1860. Before that, it was simply another mode of transportation.

Competitive skiing is very popular and as a result, there are numerous events recognized all throughout the world. There are several governing bodies that oversee and recognize such events, examples being the International Olympic Committee and the International Ski Federation. Those are just two examples out of several.

Looking back at its history, the most accurate and the oldest documented evidence for the origins of the activity was found in what is now known as modern day Sweden and Norway. There are also carvings and ancient equipment dating back thousands of years. All of these findings have different datings although all would agree that they were all from four thousand to two thousand BC.

Even the word ski has its origins from an Old Norse word, which meant firewood of split piece of wood. Racing was an organized sport that was prevalent in both Australia and America. The first recreational club was formed some time at Kiandra, Australia in 1861. This was also where the first documented international downhill carnival was held.

The activity has two main categories or genres that it is divided into. The first one is called Alpine. This is the act of going downhill and is the most well known version with resorts featuring it all around the globe. It originated in the Alps somewhere in Europe, which should be obvious due to the name. Within itself, there are sub genres.

Examples of the sub genres would be heliskiing, freestyle and the competitive classes. Those classes are giant slalom, slalom, super G, disabled and downhill. They carry some danger and it should be pointed out that for a thousand skiers, there are two to four requiring medical attention of some kind. Knee injures are the most common injuries.

The other main type is known as Nordic. This is the considered to be the oldest form and it was developed in Scandinavia, originally as an alternate way of traveling over snow. It makes use of free heel bindings that are attached to the toes of the boots, but not the heels.

It also has certain sub genres within it. An example would be skijoring, along with Telemark. There are some that do mountaineering with the same equipment, passing it off as another example. Skiing in Kashmir Gulmarg with the utilization of any style is still very recreational. It is exciting and the added danger only increases its appeal.
