Why People Buy World War 2 Army Patches

By Amanda Baird

Ever since man has learnt to walk on just two legs he has always collected things that appeal to him. Quite often there will be a connection between themselves and whatever they are collecting, but the range of things that people collect are wide and varied. Some people ask why buy world war 2 army patches for a collection if they never saw service at that time.

Despite the youth of some of these collectors there are often definite family links. It might be that a great uncle or grandfather served during this period in history. It would be quite likely that it was this person who donated the unit badge in the first instance.

As with most collections, initially it will be just that, a collection. There probably isn't a great deal of order associated with it. It will just seem like a mass of differently coloured cloth badges.

As with any collection the most important item is always that first piece. It was because of this first piece that the collection initially grew. As with most collections this initial piece will have been donated by a family member, possibly it might actually have been their own unit badge.

If it was your Grandfather who gave you that first badge, then there was a high probability that he also told you various stories associated with it. Chances are they involved going through basic training and all of the good friends that he made at that time. Then there might be various forms of specialist training that he might have been involved with. The actual combat would often be pushed to one side, despite it having happened so long ago for many it is still fresh in their memories.

However from the information that you have been given it is possible to do your own research. With this research you will be able to find out a time line, which in turn will lead you to which theatres and which campaigns this unit was involved in. Many units also have their own museums and historical societies which can be a wealth of knowledge.

From this base point you can find out which other units were also serving in that same campaign. Now your collection is starting to take a definite shape as you include the badges of the other units. Some people will prefer to keep their collection focused on just one nation.

The more experienced collectors will expand their collections to include the unit badges of other countries. Now they will be dealing with other collectors worldwide. The really experienced collector will often decide to go one step further and include both allied and axis unit badges. A good collection of the units which participated in the June 6th 1944 landings must be really impressive.

Maybe this will have given you an idea about a new collection. Your collection will grow whenever you buy world war 2 army patches. Another way to increase the size of your collection is to swap and trade with fellow collectors. All of the while you are organising and cataloguing your collection you are holding history in your hands.
