Great Towns & Cities In Texas Hill Country

By Pammy McGrath

Texas Hill Country is one of Texas's gems, filled with picturesque towns and spectacular scenery. Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the region every year, but if you wish to make Texas Hill Country your home, here are just a few towns you might consider for your relocation.

There are no shortages of historic towns in Hill Country, and Fredericksburg is a perfect example of a beautifully preserved Texas town. It offers close access to San Antonio and Austin, but has a true small-town feel. This Gillespie County city offers plenty of attractions, from tours of local wineries to a variety of art galleries, as well as outdoor activities and special community events. You can opt to live out in the country or perhaps choose a property in the historic downtown district or a spot in between.

Another possibility is the City of Kerrville, which rests along the Guadalupe River. The city has several excellent parks along the river, which offers much in the way of water sports and activities. The town also hosts the annual Kerr County Fair and the Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair as well other fun events. While Kerrville is the largest city in Kerr Country, with nearly 23,000 inhabitants, it still retains a quaint small town ambiance.

German culture is quite prevalent in many Texas Hill Country areas and towns, as much of the region was settled by immigrants from Germany. New Braunfels, for example, is named after a town in Germany and translates to "brown rock," in English. The attractions of the Guadalupe River and Comal River draw many visitors to the area, and there also is a popular water park, an annual German festival and the Christmas festivities in the town also honor the German heritage.

If you prefer a bigger city, you could look for homes in the San Antonio metro area. There are many different neighborhoods to consider, from Alamo Heights to one of the historic districts in the downtown area or perhaps a home in one of the suburbs. There is no shortage of attractions in San Antonio. The River Walk is a highly popular tourist destination and San Antonio also is home to The Alamo, which is the state's most visited attraction.
