Nautical And Shooting Star Tattoos

By Darren Hartley

Something to let people around you know you depend on the stars for guidance through your chosen life direction is nautical star tattoos. They are also symbols of a star remembrance, love and dream pursuit. Sailors who depended on the stars to never get lost at sea were the first displayers of these tattoos.

Nautical star tattoos are worn as either on the elbow or part of a sleeve tattoo to connote the direction of the true north or the definition of one's unique individuality, in the punk subculture. Lesbians wore them on their wrist, covered by a watch or bracelet during the day but shown off during the night, in the early days of the homosexual culture. They did this to signify their Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde personalities.

Guidance, good fortune, protection, security and direction are among the common meanings associated with nautical star tattoos. When they are worn by sailors, they become expressions of anxiousness for a safe trip to wherever they are supposed to go.

While a shooting star is actually a meteor entering the earth's dominion, shooting star tattoos are considered as symbols for wishes turning to realities, successes that are fleeting and temporary and luck bringing only good and not bad. Shooting star tattoos has a certain subtleness attached to them regardless of their covering a larger portion of the body area. This is particularly true for imageries of shooting stars with a star dust or a trail of smaller stars, following them.

Shooting stars tend to be associated with moments in time that left lasting impressions on a person. It could be a short romance, a special event, a person, a job, any incident that changed a person's life drastically. This could be the underlying reasons for a person to opt for shooting stars tattoos.

A shooting star can also be looked at as a representation of a person's dreams of becoming a star in his own right, or becoming the success he believes he can be, even just on a temporary basis. In this way, he has reached the stars at least in one stage of his life. Women wear shooting star tattoos frequently on the arm, leg, foot wrist, side or lower back. Seldom would these tattoos be found on the male species, as they are not considered very macho designs.
